The Marine Mammal Observer's Refresher Course is an online course intended for experienced MMOs working in UK waters, with the aim of refreshing their knowledge. It is intended to remind MMOs of the key responsibilities of their role and to highlight any recent changes in practice. Feedback to candidates on their performance in some aspects of the job is provided through completion of course exercises. Post-training support is available to all refresher course candidates. At the present time there is no requirement for MMOs to do a refresher course.
As the refresher course is aimed at experienced MMOs there are some requirements that should be met by candidates wishing to take this course. Candidates should have attended an appropriate JNCC MMO induction training course prior to taking a refresher course and ideally should have attended their most recent training course within the last four years. Candidates should also have gained some experience as an MMO.
The MMO refresher course covers the following syllabus. This course is done online. The course also contains practical exercises. The following topics are covered:
- current legislation protecting marine mammals in UK waters
- current JNCC guidelines
- the role of the MMO
- skills of the MMO - identification, distance estimation, bearings to sightings, recording behaviours, maintaining awareness of operations, recording position, recording weather
- use of the JNCC Marine mammal recording forms
- demonstration of the recording forms
- examples of recording forms to be completed by candidates
- examples of situations that may occur - candidates have to describe an appropriate course of action to ensure compliance with the guidelines
- multiple choice exam
- opportunity for questions
- offer of further support by review of report(s) (optional)
- Access to the online course for a year
- Course exercises by email
- A course certificate on successful completion of the course exercises
- Post-training support available
The MMO refresher course is an online course that can be done at your convenience. Trainees receive access to the course and electronic copies of course resources. You will need a device with internet access. The online course runs on laptops/ PCs, tablets or mobile phones. The course contains practical exercises some of which are done online and some need to be returned by email. Candidates for the refresher course will be regarded as having completed the course once the practical exercises and the exam have been completed to an acceptable standard.
